the first step

I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such strong, beautiful women. Kat and Lyndsey have known each other since grade 7….although Kat thought Lyndsey was a mean girl at first, and after two years of fear they started a life long friendship ;). The kind of friendship everyone wishes to have. Kat’s husband Aaron owns Crop Hair Boutique here in Red Deer, and is known around town as the Hair Whisperer, something I can attest to, I won’t let anyone else touch my hair haha. On Friday, the 23rd the day after their family session, Lyndsey made her way with Kat to the salon. Coffee’s in tow, they discussed hair styles for her new do.After agreeing on a few similar styles they had both pinned on Pinterest, Aaron sat Lyndsey down, spun her around away from the mirror and the first step began. After the first cut of the scissors, she said she could already feel how much lighter her head felt. After a good chunk was off it was time for a wash, and apparently I need to get my hair washed by Kat as I hear she’s pretty good at it ;)

The cut continued and so did the laughter and stories of the past. The atmosphere was that of a happy one, reminiscing about the past, like that one time Lyndsey fried her hair so bad in high school she had no choice but to cut it off (but really, who hasn’t done that lol) joking about the present and just being as happy as we all could. She had said, “I thought this was going to be the first sign of , wow this is actual real but it still hasn’t sunk in yet”

The reveal.

She gently touched the back of her neck and prepared herself to see in this new chapter of her life. “Do I have to look? Can I just go? haha” After being very surprised at her new look, she said the more she looked at it the more she really liked the new style.

The last three photos are hard for me to look at without breaking down….they hugged with smiles on their faces and love in their hearts but as Kat let go, Lyndsey pulled her closer and the weight became heavy. I only took a these three photos so I could let them have this moment but i’m glad I was able to capture what a true friendship looks like.

The ambiance, uniqueness and the ever pleasant staff make this place what it is.

Some of you may recognize this beautiful family from a few posts I did this spring. Lyndsey is a good friend of mine and back in the spring she was diagnosed with breast cancer, at the young age of 29. (You may take a look back at the beginning of her journey here & here) nearly 6 months has passed, full of chemo, sickness, good days and bad days, struggles and  triumphs. But I am happy to say that her chemo was discontinued early due to the great response the cancer was having to it. We decided to celebrate by having a little lifestyle session in their home at the beginning of October. They snuggled in bed, read their favourite books, ...

Sometimes when you have close photographer friends that feel the weight of having growing children slipping through their fingers as much as you do, you just take a trip out to the mountains, brave the cold (well compared to the temperatures the past few weeks, this was summer lol), and hold your kids as close as you can. Amanda and I traded session back in October and it was so great to finally get a chance to photograph her and her two sweet little ladies. When I take these types of images, I take them with the children in mind. These images are not just for us as parents but for our children, our children's children and so on. Think for ...
